During Super Bowl IV at Tulane Stadium on January 11, 1970, Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Emmitt Thomas intercepted a pass late in the fourth quarter to seal the 23–7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. His crucial interception in the end zone snuffed out the Vikings' final comeback attempt and was one of three interceptions thrown by Minnesota quarterback against the Chiefs' dominant defense. In addition to the game-clinching turnover, Thomas recorded a key tackle earlier in the game to help limit the heavily favored Vikings offense to just a single touchdown.

Emmitt Thomas put together one of the most storied careers in professional football history, transitioning from an undrafted free agent to a legendary player and elite coach. He spent his entire 13-season playing career (1966–1978) as a cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was named to 5 Pro Bowls (and AFL All-Star games) and earned All-Pro honors while playing in 181 career games. He won two AFL Championships and Super Bowl IV as a foundational member of the Chiefs' legendary defense. Emmitt Thomas was permanently immortalized when he was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2008. After retiring as a player, Thomas spent 38 seasons as an NFL coach. He won two more Super Bowls as an assistant coach for Washington and later returned to Kansas City to coach the defensive backs from 2010 to 2018. He was honored for his dedication with the prestigious Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman Award for lifetime achievement as an assistant coach
